How To Start Journaling
It is often said that the benefits of journaling are second to none. Open any lifestyle magazine and I’m certain you’ll find an article about how journaling can revolutionise your mindset. It may not be a surprise however to find that many people have never used one or simply don’t quite know where to begin. Often, we are so overwhelmed with images of self-help journals online that subconsciously, when it comes to starting one, we don’t have the confidence or knowledge to move forward with it.
Journaling can be used for an abundance of reasons, from writing down thoughts when you’re feeling anxious to acting as a tool for self-affirming or memory keeping. What is key when journaling, is that you focus on your own personal journey, not the picture-perfect ideal you see online. Think of your journal as an acquaintance, with no strings attached.
Yes, it is well documented that journaling is good for your mental health, but how does one actually go about it?
Step 1: Recognise Why
Why are you starting a journal? What do you wish to achieve or feel from doing so? Is it a record of your daily life or is it a place to check in with yourself every now and again? It might even be a space for remembering key life events or for expressing your imagination.
Step 2: Choose Your Favourite Medium
A journal can come in many forms from a physical paper book to a document on your iPad – choose a medium which suits you and your lifestyle best and stick to it.
Step 3: Identify Your Purpose & Go For It
Whether you tend to your journal in the early hours of the morning or late at night, choose a time which best suits your purpose. From removing anxiety before your day begins to sparking joy in the memories you wish to preserve, whatever your purpose, keep the end goal clear and go for it!
